still series
digital work based on a film stills, 2023
The still series examine neuropsychological states in the context of trauma, dissociation and memory and their aethestic relationship to the idea of dreaming.
Shown are digital works based on film stills from different sequences that originally have been part of an experimental video works.
Tearing a single frame from a video and altering it through digital editing is an evergoing practice of the artist, which stands as an artistic analogy to the way memories are fragmented or torn apart by traumatic experiences, as well as to the neuropsychological mechanism of perceptual dysfunctions that can occur as part of a trauma-associated dissociation.
The works that are part of „still series III: dreams, displaced, dissolve“ draw a line between the trance-like state during dissociative situations and an idea of dreaming. Bringing them back into an analog, materialized reality as large-scaled textile works and installing with them freely throughout the room, a certain flexibility, haptic sensory and immersiveness can be brought into their stillness, bringing the frozen back into motion.
This interactive installtion is framed by the „still series IV: intimacy, invasion“ and „still series V: invasion, inbody“, which contain fragments of the traumatic memory itself.
Exploring the topic of trauma and dissociation in an (playful) artistic act releases a pathological strain around them and makes aesthetic intervetions on those still tabooed and marginalized topics possible.
To rip out a single frame of the film and change it through digital editing, is a typical working way of mine. It stands as an analogy to how memories are fragmentated or torn apart throught trauma and how perception will be disrupted while dissocating processes as a result of this. Here are stills of several sequences from my experimental filming archive, that used as a base for the still series.

since i was a child, i would be absorbed in a dreamy way of perceiving the world around me, since today I am getting lost in structures, in the branching of a tree, in the glitter of watery surfaces. this is a part of my personality, which might be enjoyable. but there is a connection between this trance state and dissociative processes. drifting away comes then as a freezing reaction to triggering situations and it is less controllable and impedes me in my daily life. through an artistic perspective, i builded a relationship between my dreaminess and my dissociation disorder. to explore this artistically releases the pathological tension - through connecting it with the concept of dreaming I will put this dissociative status outside of the frame “illness”.
